October 2017 Mix

October rules. Here’s what I was listening to:

  • Kevin Morby – City Music: At first, I thought I preferred 2016’s Singing Saw, but now I think I prefer 2017’s City Music. Either way, you all should be Kevin Morby fans.
  • Kelela – Take Me Apart: Love her so much…so pissed I didn’t get tix to her Durham show before it sold out.
  • Wand – Plum: Took my a while to adjust to their new sound, since I love their first two albums so much. But Plum is great, too. Recommended for people who wish Radiohead still used guitars. They rock live, too (see above).
  • Solange – A Seat at the Table: Extreme late-pass. Still can’t get over how great her Hopscotch show was.

September 2017 Mix

September is always the best month, and this one was no exception. It started with the incredible Downtown Boys, was followed by a great Hopscotch (Solange killed it), which was followed by a trip to Asheville for Broken Social Scene. There were some great new albums to listen to along the way:

  • The War on Drugs – A Deeper Understanding: Arguably the best band not named Thee Oh Sees (or whatever derivative of that name they’re using this month).
  • Oh Sees – Orc: Oh, hey, speaking of! Do you like to get your face melted?
  • Downtown Boys – Cost of Living: Anyone asking where the good political anthems of the Trump era have been…point them this way.
  • El Michels Affair – Return to the 37th Chamber: Probably the last time I enjoyed an instrumental funk album this much was when the same band put out some Wu covers back in 2009.
  • Action Bronson – Blue Chips 7000: Not his best album, but not his best album is still among the best hip-hop albums of the year.
  • Kevin Morby – Singing Saw: Had never heard of him til I was researching Hopscotch bands. Very recommended for fans of War on Drugs, Phosphorescent, and Yellowbirds.

Also really enjoyed new ones from Liars, Tanya Morgan, Lil Uzi Vert, Sean PriceAesop Rock & Homeboy Sandman, Corner Boy P, A$AP Mob, and A$AP Ferg. Any other month and any of those albums might be highlighted as among the best.

July 2017 Mix

Here are some good albums I was listening to as the weather became unbearable:

  • Gang of Four – Entertainment!: Yes, I should have been up on this long ago, but this kid who grew up listening to nothing but hip-hop is just now discovering all the amazing late 70s/early 80s punk stuff.
  • The Feeling of Love – Reward Your Grace: From 2013, but another one I had missed. Do you like weird French dudes who sing in English and sound kinda like Thee Oh Sees?
  • Thee Oh Sees – The Master’s Bedroom Is Worth Spending A Night In: Speaking of the greatest band ever, how did I sleep on this one from 2008? Had been digging through all of their old stuff recently through all their naming conventions, but this is the album when they became Thee Oh Sees, greatest band in the world.

May 2017 Mix

Hi, I’m Nordy. I’m good at taking shitty concert pics (see above) and forgetting to update my blog. Anyways, here were the albums that caught my attention this spring:

  • Roc Marciano – Rosebudd’s Revenge: A typically great Roc Marciano album, but Roc Marciano albums are too grimy for spring. Will have to remember to revisit once it gets cold and the sun disappears.
  • Tyvek – On Triple Beams: After hearing the fantastic Origin of What, I had to go back and listen to these guys’ older albums. They might be my favorite band not named Thee Oh Sees.
  • Natural Causes – Natural Causes: If you like your garage-punk snotty and paranoid…
  • Real Estate – In Mind: If you like your indie-rock soothing and consistent…
  • Paul Cary & the Small Scarys – Coyote: A 2014 album, reminiscent of the Deadly Snakes.

Honorable mention to Your Old Droog and Rick Ross.  On to the mix:
