February 2015 Mix

Albums I listened to when I wasn’t going to the movies:

  • Coachwhips – Get Yer Body Next Ta Mine:  Re-release of John Dwyer’s pre-Thee Oh Sees material proves that he’s been making great music since at least 2002.
  • King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Oddments:  The poor man’s Tame Impala.  Not nearly as good as Tame Impala…definitely more lighthearted.
  • Rae Sremmurd – SremmLife:  Best pop album in ages.
  • Ty Segall – Mr. Face EP:  Four songs is way too short, but four Ty Segall songs > no Ty Segall songs.
  • I LOVE MAKONNEN – I LOVE MAKONNEN EP:  I tried to resist but dude just has an insane talent for creating ear worms.

Also, Mouse on Tha Track’s Airtime and Joey Bada$$’s B4.DA.$$ are both pretty damn good.

On to the mix:
1) Rae Sremmurd – Unlock The Swag (Feat. Jace of Two-9)

Fall 2014 Mix

Coming at you with a double-length, Hulkster-approved mix this month, as it’s been a while, and there was a ton of great music to share.  If you scroll to the mix, you’ll undoubtedly find songs from these albums:

  • Wand – Ganglion Reef: This is soooo my shit. Operating somewhere in the realm between Ty Segall and Tame Impala.
  • Orlando Julius with the Heliocentrics – Jaiyede Afro: I feel we’ve exhausted the supply of “re-discovered” West African music from the 70s.  Glad that these guys are making new music that still captures that sound.
  • King Tuff – Black Moon Spell: I don’t care what Pitchfork says, I thought this was another fun album.
  • Curren$y – The Drive In Theatre: Not sure how I missed this one earlier in the year.
  • Sir Michael Rocks – Banco: Much like his buddy Curren$y, there’s much to be said about competent rapping over great production.

Honorable mentions to Karl Hector & the Malcouns, Spider Bags, Halo, DJ Mustard and Zilla.

September 2014 Mix

September 2014: great month for live music…not the best month for new shit hitting my iPod.  Hopscotch was a lot of fun (War on Drugs, Spoon, St. Vincent, De La Soul, the Tills, Last Year’s Men, Spider Bags, Flesh Wounds, Phosphorescent) and I also got to see War on Drugs (again), Dam-Funk, King Khan & BBQ Show, and the Black Lips.  All that, and I missed the Wand/Ty Segall show due to illness, and Apache Dropout due to being old and not wanting to be out late on a weeknight.

As for the recorded stuff, here were the albums I enjoyed:

  • Ty Segall – Manipulator: Took me a couple of listens to get into it as it leans a lot more “classic rock” sounding than “face-shredding garage mayhem” sounding.
  • Apache Dropout – Heavy Window: Not quite face-shredding…more deranged garage mayhem.
  • The-Dream – Royalty – The Prequel:  Your favorite R&B singer’s favorite R&B singer.

On to the mix:

1) Ty Segall – Tall Man Skinny Lady
2) Allah-Las – Had It All
3) Ty Segall – Feel
4) Apache Dropout – Left the Nest
5) Tommy McCook – The Right Track
6) Leroy Smart – Pride and Ambition
7) Armand Hammer – CRWNS
8) Dilated Peoples – The Dark Room (feat. Vince Staples)
9) Common – Speak My Piece
10) Declaime – Cops Ain’t Ishh
11) Ghetto Ghouls – My Hands
12) Plague Vendor – Black Sap Scriptures
13) Ty Segall – The Connection Man
14) Ghetto Ghouls – Simple C
15) Apache Dropout – Movie Magic
16) Busta Rhymes – Calm Down
17) Cam’ron – Sweetest (Feat. Rod Rhaspy)

August 2014 Mix

Sunbathing Animal

Sunbathing Animal

July and August of 2014 provided me with a summer to forget, from a personal standpoint, but was fairly memorable musically, with several good releases.  Here are the albums that will cause me to think back to that boring, uneventful summer of 2014:

  • Parquet Courts – Sunbathing Animal: If I were new to Parquet Courts, I’d start with Light Up Gold, but this is a great album, too.
  • Hamilton Leithauser – Black Hours: The Walkmen frontman’s first solo album doesn’t stray too far from the sound of the band that made him famous, but strays enough that it took a bit for this one to grow on me.
  • Tijuana Panthers – Wayne Interest: Rock-solid garage rock album.  Dare I say, garage-rock-solid?
  • Total Control – Typical System: Might seem a bit unfocused on first listen, but is probably my favorite of this bunch.  Best description I can think of is a slightly less-strange version of Liars.

Several other very good albums worth checking out this summer from Peter Matthew Bauer, The Fresh & Onlys, Lee Fields, Your Old Droog, and Popcaan.

On to the mix:

1) The Fresh & Onlys – Animal of One
2) Peter Matthew Bauer – You Are the Chapel

<= jam of the summer, btw
10) Popcaan – Everything Nice
11) Jeremih ft YG – Dont Tell Em
12) Ab-Soul – Tree of Life
13) Smoke DZA – Ghost Of Dipset (feat. Cam’ron)

15) G-Side – Dead Fresh (feat. Kristmas & Grilly)
16) Meyhem Lauren – Honey Champagne Sorbet
17) White Fence – Paranoid Bait
18) Total Control – Expensive Dog
19) Tijuana Panthers – Dark Matter
20) Parquet Courts – Black and White
21) Tijuana Panthers – Fired

June 2014 Mix

Sorry I had to skip over May.  Work + a World Cup = not a lot of time for blogging.  But I still heard some excellent albums these past two months:

  • The Antlers – Familiars: I don’t normally like music that’s so slow and pretty, but the Antlers do it for me.
  • Phosphorescent – Muchacho: Actually came out in 2013…shouts to my buddy Kurt for the recommendation.
  • Future Islands – Singles: Wasn’t crazy about On the Water, so glad to see them bounce back and get the acclaim they deserve with this one.
  • Childbirth – It’s a Girl!: Hands-down the funniest album I’ve ever heard…plus the music is actually good.
  • Future – Honest: Drags in a few spots, but still damn good.

Honorable mention goes to Thee Oh Sees and Woods.  On to the mix:

1) The Antlers – Hotel
