June 2013 Mix

Sorry folks, there won’t be a June mix.  It’s not that I’m too busy or burnt out or anything.  It’s just that there wasn’t enough good music to justify a mix.  Will be back at the end of July with some serious heat.

In the meantime, one album worth checking out:

  • Bass Drum of Death – Bass Drum of Death:  Another month, another garage rock album.  Good enough to get me to buy tickets to Hopscotch?  We’ll see…

February/March Mix

Photo Mar 28, 2013, 8-11 AM

Look who it is, sliding in late, like a defensive midfielder trying to play soccer in a blizzard.  I’m doing another one.  Enjoy these while they last.

Good albums this month:

On to the mix:

1) Homeboy Sandman – Coral Reefs
I can’t hear the words “coral reef” without having flashbacks to my junior year high school health class when they showed us a slideshow of STDs. Word to genital warts.

2) $amhill – Verses
Not big on hooks. Word to Shaq & RZA.

3) Curren$y – Mary
Spoiler alert, this song is about weed, not about an actual girl named Mary. Word to M. Night Shyamalan.

4) Heliocentrics – Wrecking Ball
No tricks here. This song is totally about wrecking balls. Word to Scott Dann.

5) Foxygen – No Destruction
Honorable mention this month to Foxygen’s We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic. Very promising debut. Word to sounding a lot like Mick Jagger on this song.

6) Thee Oh Sees – Minotaur
Floating Coffin drops 4/16. Word to getting high and listening to music four days later.

7) Roy Junior – Victim Of Circumstance
“I was raised on knuckle sandwiches, in an alley crib” is about as good as opening lines get. Word to punching babies in the face.

8) Parquet Courts – Stoned and Starving
Favorite song of the month. Word to this hungry little fella.

9) Airstrip – Pleasure Center
Word to my little corner of NC having a great music scene.

10) Foxygen – We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace and Magic
Word to the 20th century ambassador of peace and magic.

11) Parquet Courts – Yonder is Closer to the Heart

12) Legends – I`ll Come Again

Word to the Hedgehog.

13) Rats – Rats Revenge
Are these guys throwing out 60s gang threats? Word to pre-dating Bangin’ on Wax by 30 years.

14) Toro y Moi – High Living
Sounds like what would happen if DJ Screw got his hands on those Flashback comps.

15) Courtney John – Every Way
Word to guys who can sing keeping roots reggae alive.

16) Pusha T – Take My Life (Feat. Andrea Martin)
I love reggae-influenced hip-hop beats, but it’s always a sad reminder that a young Nordy once blew 8 hard-earned dollars on this.

17) Young Thug – Foreign (ft. Hellacoppa)
Young Thug = Future with a sense of humor?

18) Jeremih – All The TIme Feat. Lil Wayne & Natasha Mosley
Posted despite the Weezy verse.

19) Pusha T – Trust You (Feat. Kevin Gates)
Kevin Gates = Future with a smaller appearance fee?

20) Freeband Gang – Karate Chop (Future & Casino)
Future = Future

21) Gucci Mane – Servin
It’s Guwop!

I feel like I’ve been sitting on this one forever. Just haven’t had the time to post. And you know what…this shit is NOT worth the wait! Possibly the shittiest collection of songs since I started doing this thing. Unless you really like the hip-hop stuff I post, don’t bother. This month ain’t for you.

Albums I liked this month:

  • Riff Raff – Hologram Panda: Are you fucking kidding me?  The only album I liked this month was motherfucking Riff Raff?  Fuck you, January 2013!

On to the mix. Next mix will be posted at the end of March.

1) D Prosper – Atom Anthem (ft. Jay Electronica)
Rare Electronica verses.

2) Meyhem Lauren – Burgundy Guess Jeans [prod. by ATG]
The best track from the best-named (but mostly mediocre) mixtape of the year, Mandatory Brunch Meetings. Best title I heard until Byron Crawford decided to name his new book Infinite Crab Meats.

3) Action Bronson – Drugs & Cheese On A Roll
Bbbbbboooonnuuuussssssss tracks!

4) Truck North – Capital Crime feat Black Thought & Asher Roth
Does Asher Roth kind of kill his verse? I guess he’s on that kill-a-guest-verse-but-his-flow-would-be-annoying-over-a-whole-album-type steez.

5) Riff Raff – Peppermint Tint
Rap game Chevy Chase.

6) P-Lo feat HBK Skipper – Want it All (Prod. P-Lo of The Invasion)
This P-Lo cat is on his DJ Burn One shit. Need to keep an eye on this kid.

7) Starlito – Sober Kick Boxing [Prod. By Malay]
No other rapper could have made this song.

8) Young Thug – Keep In Touch
No other rapper could have made this song, either. I could listen to this chorus all day.

9) Jeremih – 773 Love
Mike Will taking over R&B.

10) Riff Raff – Chargers (Prod. SK The Hit Man]
Ballin’ so hard coulda played for the Chargers.

11) A$AP Rocky – F__kin’ Problems feat. Drake, 2 Chainz & Kendrick Lamar
Radio hit of the month.

12) Wale – The One Eye Kitten Song (ft. Travis Parker)
Should-be radio hit of next month (even though Wale is annoying)?

13) Young Jeezy – RIP ft. 2 Chainz
Jeezy and Titty Boi rip a beat the really was meant for Too $hort and 40 Water.

14) Grimes – Genesis
To me, Grimes is bootleg Purity Ring. To Pitchfork, Purity Ring is bootleg Grimes.

15) DJ Sega – Horny Women
16) DJ Booman – Hydro Ghetto
17) DJ Booman – Guncock

Props to the Baltimore Ravens.

18) Courtney John & Ticklah – Born To Fly

19) Major Lazer – Get Free (Original Mix)
Best song of 2012 that I somehow didn’t listen to until 2013.

20) Jim James – All Is Forgiven
I love Jim James, but his album didn’t quite do it for me.

Skee Ball2

Good albums this month:

  • Action Brosnon – Rare Chandeliers: If, for nothing else, having the best cover art of the year.
  • Roc Marciano – Reloaded: The hip-hop soundtrack to the rest of your winter.
  • Clinic – Free Reign: Sort of like Spoon or the Sea and Cake, Clinic a) have a distinctive sound of their own, b) never stray too far from what they do best, and c) always satisfy.

Honorable mentions go to The Golden Boys’ Dirty Fingernails (throw it on during your next tailgate) and Mouse on the Track’s Millionaire Dreamzzz (throw it on during your next trip to a black strip club) and Menahan Street Band’s The Crossing (throw it on during your next dinner party).

Good songs this month:

1) Clinic – Seesaw
Slightly increased menace and aggression from 2010′s Bubblegum.

2) Terry Malts – I Do
Had gotten their CD at a show several months ago…forgot I bought it…found it…listened…it’s OK.

3) Clinic – King Kong
After Radiohead, are these guys the best English band I care the most about right now? Probably, just edging out Spiritualized.

4) Mac DeMarco – Me and Mine
Since I absolutely love 2, I decided to check out Mac DeMarco’s other 2012 release, Rock and Roll Night Club. Unfortunately, this is probably the only song that approaches the quality of stuff on 2.

5) The Golden Boys – Curtains
For fans of Reigning Sound, Spider Bags, and chasing your beer with a shot of whiskey.

6) Brothers of Soul – Wait For Me
As we transition out of the golden age of obscure music blogs, “new” gems like this are becoming increasingly rare. Luckily Oliver Wang is still on his grind.

7) Jet Life – Too High (Feat. Trademark Da Skydiver, Young Roddy & CornerBoy P)
Yes, they’re still rapping about weed over smooth-ass beats #iaintmad

8) Lil Reese – Haters
Maybe Lil’ Reese has haters because he beats women and killed Lil JoJo. Um, definitely don’t pay money for his shit.

9) Chief Keef – Love Sosa
Bound to be a bigger hit than “I Don’t Like”?

10) Trinidad Jame$ – All Gold Everything

11) Future – Same Damn Time
Shouts to Donnell Rawlings for opening his set with a riff on this song.

12) Waka Flocka Flame – Hard in da Paint (Purple Bastard Remix)

13) Menahan Street Band – Three Faces
2012′s best use of hand claps.

14) Hollie Cook – Cry Feat. Horseman (Disco Mix)
A 4-minute escape from the cold.

15) Roc Marciano – Peru
Best producer on the mic? He gets plenty of plaudits for his rapping, but this might be the illest beat I’ve heard all year.

16) Action Bronson – Modern Day Revelations feat Roc Marciano
“I’m Jean Claude Van Damme and you the challenger”

17) Captain Murphy – Immaculation Ft. Azizi Gibson and Jeremiah Jae
FlyLo gets his Quasimoto on.

18) $amhill – Changed Man
I’m quickly becoming a big fan.

19) Action Bronson – The Symbol
Video of the year:

20) French Montana – State Of Mind (prod. Harry Fraud)
2012, the year of the Fraud.

21) Mystikal – Hit Me
Ain’t nothing that Son of Bazerk wasn’t doing in 1991. Unfortunately, Son of Bazerk hasn’t done it since 91, so I’m glad Mysitkal stepped to fill the void.

22) Mouse On Tha Track – Too Much (Feat. LRG & Q-Red)
If I actually partied on NYE (or any other night, for that matter) this would have been my theme song.
